Shepherds and Butchers was nominated for Best Original Song. The film won this category with the song Angels written by Barry Gibb and performed by Vusi Mahlasela
Angels’, especially written for SHEPHERDS AND BUTCHERS, was composed by Barry Gibb (co-founder of the Bee Gees) with ‘The Voice of South Africa’, Vusi Mahlasela performing the song. ‘Angels’ is written by Barry Gibb, Stephen Gibb and Ashley Gibb. Directed by award-winning director, Oliver Schmitz and produced by Anant Singh and Brian Cox. The film also sees an ensemble of well-known South African talent including Garion Dowds, Deon Lotz, Robert Hobbs, Eduan van Jaarsveldt, Marcel van Heerden and Sylvia Mdunyelwa.
Gibb explained what spurred him to write the song: “We were just inspired by the film. The very thought of the way we all treat each other, and the inhumanity that we all tend to experience as a culture really struck us as profound, and of course, the film is profound. We do take a stand against capital punishment, and this is a cultural statement. Who enjoys the idea that we kill each other?”
