OH BROTHER, YOU'RE FAMOUS," SAYS ANDY GIBB

(Fab 208, April 1969)
Barry's staunchest fan is without doubt his eleven-year-old brother Andy. They are a decade apart in age, but in fact are very close.

Says Andy: "I think he's my favourite brother, he's so kind and generous, and when he comes to visit us he plays with me. I've only got to ask for something and he'll buy it for me. I think he's too soft-hearted, people can talk him into things and he hates hurting anyone.

For my eleventh birthday he bought me a horse which I've called Gala. He has just bought the bridle and saddle for it and he also paid for the delivery from Sussex.

I see him about twice a week. He takes me out for rides in his Bentley but he doesn't let me have a go at driving it, though!  I go up to his flat sometimes, and we play together.

He's very kind and generous and when I grow up I hope I'm like him

South African film notched up another accolade as Anant Singh’s 'Shepherds and Butchers' won an award at The Berlin Film festival on Saturday.

The film, produced by Singh and directed by Oliver Schmitz, was awarded the third place Panorama Audience Award for Fiction Films - a first for a South African Film.

Commenting on the Award, Singh said, “We are overwhelmed by this acknowledgement for our homegrown South African film which competed with the best in the world.  It is a testament to the amazing talent we assembled for the film, and this enabled us to successfully compete in the international arena.”

'Shepherds and Butchers' stars newcomer, Garion Dowds as well as a number of well known South African actors including Deon Lotz, Robert Hobbs, Eduan van Jaarsveldt and Marcel van Heerden alongside  Steve Coogan (‘Philomena’) and Andrea Riseborough (‘Birdman’, ‘Oblivion’).

Barry Gibb Composes Original Song for Berlin Film Festival’s ‘Shepherds and Butchers’

Producer Anant Singh revealed Tuesday that Barry Gibb, co-founder of the Bee Gees, has composed the song “Angels” for Oliver Schmitz’s “Shepherds and Butchers,” which will have its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival on Feb. 13.

“Shepherds and Butchers,” which stars Steve Coogan (“Philomena”), Andrea Riseborough (“Birdman”) and Garion Dowds, is set at a time when Apartheid is crumbling in South Africa. A hotshot lawyer faces his biggest test when he agrees to defend a white prison guard who has killed seven black men. What ensues is a compelling charge against death penalty itself, in a case that changed history.

Gibb explained what inspired him to write the song: “We were just inspired by the film. The very thought of the way we all treat each other, and the inhumanity that we all tend to experience as a culture really struck us as profound, and of course, the film is profound. We do take a stand against capital punishment, and this is a cultural statement. Who enjoys the idea that we kill each other?”

“We travelled to Miami to screen the film for Barry and his family, as we knew he had strong views about the death penalty. They were so moved by the film that Barry wrote ‘Angels,’ which has complemented the message of the film. We felt that the song needed a strong South African flavor and having Vusi Mahlasela, who is known as ‘The Voice’ of South Africa, perform with Barry, we achieved this resonance,” said Singh.

The track “Angels” plays over the closing credits of the film. It is written by Barry Gibb, Stephen Gibb and Ashley Gibb, and performed by Vusi Mahlasela with Barry Gibb.

The song is published by Crompton Songs (BMI), Tune O Matic Songs (BMI) and Gee Son Songs (BMI). All rights are administered by Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp. Barry Gibb appears courtesy of Columbia Records.

The film is produced by Singh (“Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”) and Brian Cox (“Kite”) for Videovision Entertainment and Distant Horizon, and executive produced by Robert Naidoo, Sudhir Pragjee, Sanjeev Singh, Andrew Bonamour and Andrew Gill. WestEnd Films is handling international sales.
